Albuquerque skateboarder Mariah Duran is able to make historical past on the Olympics

Duran started in Albuquerque – she learned her first tricks in Los Altos Skate Park.

“That was definitely a home game for me,” said Duran. “I grew up with it. It was definitely my early days of skating.”

But her skills took her far beyond the land of enchantment. Duran’s professional career began in 2018 and has since won dozens of championships around the world.

Duran was even voted number 1 female street skateboarder in the country earlier this year.

“We officially announced the team that would go to Tokyo and I had a moment when I couldn’t believe it. I was super emotional, I think I even cried and cried on stage because someone asked me what about? are you going to tell your 10 year old self? ‘”said Duran. “And I just thought, oh my god, I literally can’t believe I made it as far as I just fell in love with skating, moved on to shift work at Dion, and somehow convinced myself it was temporary . ” and telling me that every day and just believing in something that seemed impossible. “

Duran said she was excited to see what this new chapter brings not just for her but for skaters around the world.

“I feel like setting the bar, when you set the bar I have a feeling that they are only meant to be climbed and that someone else will bring something new to the table,” she said. “I’m just excited to see the progress skateboarding will have after that.”

Regardless of what happens at the Games, Duran said she will keep skating and hopes to get more new Mexicans on the boards too.

“I’m trying to manifest like a skateboarding facility in New Mexico, where we can have up-to-date parks preparing us, skaters like me and hopefuls who want to pursue this.” at the elite level, “said Duran.” I really feel like opening the door to other people is the only way to describe yourself as successful. It’s not a one-way street. You’ll burn out if you do. But when you have a whole collective that is just finding itself and growing, it’s so great to see that. “

But for now – Duran says if you can believe it, you can achieve it.

“Don’t be a product of your surroundings, be a product of your imagination,” she said.

The women’s street skateboarding event starts on Sunday evening. Duran and three other women from Team USA will fight for a place in the final.
