‘Birria’ tacos have gotten more and more widespread in New Mexico as the newest meals pattern

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – The latest taco craze has hit the Albuquerque subway. Restaurant owners say many of their customers have never heard of Birria Tacos, but they have quickly become bestsellers.

If you’ve scrolled through social media, you’ve probably seen someone share a video of people dipping tacos. Angelo Orona runs a popular Facebook group, Tacos of New Mexico. He says Birria became a hit after people started sharing these videos online.

“It’s very photogenic. When you see people consuming and eating birria they usually dip them in this really hearty sauce and it looks just great, ”Orona said. “Birria is a dish that was traditionally made in southern Mexico.”

Made from ground meat – usually beef in the US and lamb or goat meat in Mexico – the tacos are served with a broth, usually filled with spices and cilantro. Orona says the dish was featured in a recent Netflix documentary series, Taco Chronicles.

“I think this trend has particularly caught on in the southwest,” said Orona. “We’ve seen a lot of interest in Birria over the past six or eight months, and I think that coincides with the fact that Netflix had a documentary about different types of tacos in Mexican culture.”

Edgar Cuvas, owner of the Lonchera Forasteros food truck, says Birria has quickly become one of their best-selling items. Cuvas says he even serves Birria with ramen noodles.

“You’re doing great,” said Cuvas. “We started a month ago and people love it.” The dish also appears in other locations in Albuquerque. Duke City Taco and Birrieria y Tacos Alex Tijuana Style have Birria items on their menus as well as Tacos la Mordida and Changos.

“You can eat your quesadilla and birria, dip them in the juice and make a different taste. It tastes better that way, ”said Cuvas. “I like to sell this food and people will be happy with all of these dishes.”

The more people that get out there, the better it is to support small businesses during the pandemic. Orona says the tacos give people the opportunity to try something new.

“Tacos and taco culture is diverse and rich,” Orona said. “I would challenge anyone out there to step out of their box and try different types of tacos when you go out.”

Birria is said to come from the Mexican state of Jalisco. The dish has become popular in Southern California and the Southwest in recent years.
