California man charged with taking pictures law enforcement officials in Albuquerque


At 7 a.m. on Thursday, police responded to a call about an armed robbery south of Western Skies and Central Ave. SE in Albuquerque. The criminal complaint said the alleged shooter was one of two suspects the victim described.

At 8:38 a.m., the victim identified the two suspects who were walking north at the Maverick gas station along Copper Avenue NE and Juan Tabo Blvd NE. The victim called 911 after realizing that one of the suspects was carrying his backpack and the other was carrying a gun.

At around 9:16 a.m., the victim met APD officials in the Summer Avenue and Juan Tabo Blvd. area. NE and positively identified the suspects as going west on Summer.

Officer Verbeck and Officer Eichel followed the suspects on foot as the suspects turned south down an alley between Juan Tabo and Muriel St. NE. In the alley, the alleged shooter then shot Eichel on his left forearm and shot Verbeck in the neck and on his arm.

Sergeant Kenny and Officer Gunderson were watching the suspected shooter in an area near Federico’s Mexican Food and Dutch Bros., south of Verbeck and Eichel. Officials exchanged shots before Ramirez was hit by projectiles.

Kenny was shot in the bulletproof vest and Gunderson was hit in the face with shards of glass and splinters as he took cover behind his tagged police car.

The second suspect was not identified or arrested by the APD, but described as a smaller, skinny person who wore black pants and a black sweatshirt over a white T-shirt at the scene. The complaint said he had walked south down the alley. He was also observed to be unarmed and was not seen shooting at the officers.

The four officers and the suspected shooter were taken to the UNM hospital. The alleged gunman sustained multiple injuries and was reportedly in stable condition with UNMH.

A wallet that belonged to the victim was found in the bag of the suspected rifleman at the hospital. Inside the wallet was the victim’s ID and credit card.

APD released pictures of a wanted person who they believe may be related to the shooting. The person is described as a man dressed all in black and carrying a gray Puma backpack.

APD is looking for the person in these photos, possibly in connection with yesterday’s shooting in which 4 police officers were injured. Described as wearing an all black w / gray Puma backpack. If you have any information, call @CrimeStoppersNM or 242-COPS.

APD has also set up a portal asking the public for help in gathering evidence and information on the case.
