‘Elvis’ among the many new balloons on the occasion in Albuquerque

A new Elvis hot air balloon and another in the shape of a child in a wheelchair are among the new shapes participating in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

The 41st annual event begins on Saturday with the launch of hundreds of hot air balloons.

Fiesta officials are hoping for better weather for the nine-day affair after wind and rain sidelined balloons for some events last year, reducing attendance by around 100,000.

Still, the organizers broke a world record last year by sending 345 balloons up at the same time.

More than 550 pilots registered with flyballons during the fiesta. Other balloons that will make their debut at the Albuquerque Fiesta include Simba the Lion and Cosmo the Astronaut.
