Governor Lujan Grisham hosts roundtables with educators from New Mexico

During a special roundtable discussion on Friday, teachers from across the country had the opportunity to share their ideas. Your number one solution? Better pay.

The governor’s office is already working on plans for a 7% increase.

“If lawmakers approve the governor’s proposal, we will have the highest average teacher salaries in the region – Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas,” said Kurt Steinhaus, state education secretary. “The average would be $ 64,000 a year.”

But teachers also said that auxiliaries – such as career counselors and carers – also deserve pay increases. Not only that, but student teachers need some kind of support as well.
