Guitarist John Maestas returns to New Mexico to share his New Orleans sounds »Albuquerque Journal
Just four years ago, guitarist John Maestas left Albuquerque for New Orleans. Since then he has caused a sensation there.
Maestas has played with many musicians, has his own band called Juan Tigre and started a record label.
Now he and the band are in Duke City playing a series of seven gigs and a master class on July 30th at Grandma’s. The first gig is tonight at the Scalo Northern Italian Grill.
“I love coming home and seeing everyone, but I love New Orleans. It was nothing but taking care of me, ”said Maestas. “I’ve made a great community of musicians and even better friends. I love how people celebrate life with music there. “
He will lead his band on most of the gigs. In one – an outdoor concert on Tuesday, July 26th, in Santa Fe Plaza – Maestas will be part of bassist Max Moran’s New Orleans ensemble Neospectric.
The concert is part of the New Mexico Jazz Festival and the Santa Fe Bandstand. The same New Orleans musicians are in Juan Tigre and Neospectric.
“Neospectric is a mix of jazz, funk and original,” said Maestas.
“Juan Tigre is a lot more electric and rockier, but we still do R&B, jazz and our own spin on Brazilian music.”
All performances and the master class are free.
