Tesla is coming to New Mexico

NAMBE, NM (KRQE) – The first partnership of its kind to open a Tesla plant on a sovereign pueblo. Heads of State applaud the deal between Tesla and Nambe Pueblo. The governor of the pueblo describes Thursday as a historic moment that will have lasting effects.

“This location will not only create permanent jobs, but is also part of a long-term relationship with Tesla. As the company works with the Pueblo of Nambe to provide education and training opportunities and economic development to tribal members, ”said the governor of Nambe Pueblo Phillip Perez.

The clean energy company plans to convert an old casino in Nambe into its first distribution and delivery center in New Mexico. Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan are excited about Tesla’s move to the state and say it is a great example of investing in clean energy and rural America.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham also welcomes the move and emphasizes the state’s commitment to low-emission and zero-emission vehicles. There is also a private group of New Mexico citizens who have been working to bring Tesla to the state since 2015.

“On behalf of the 536 club members and countless New Mexicans who are planning to become Tesla owners but have been waiting in the wings for news of a national facility for sales, service and delivery, I would like to say thank you, and gratitude first, thank you very much.” said Brian Dear, founder of Tesla Owners of New Mexico.

Now there’s a law on the state’s books that bans vehicle manufacturers from selling directly to consumers like Tesla does. State law forces car buyers to turn to independent dealers. Some lawmakers have tried to repeal this rule in the past, but it has failed. It’s not clear if building a facility on sovereign pueblo land is Tesla’s way of circumventing that law. 23 other states have similar laws.

KRQE News 13 reached out to the New Mexico Auto Dealers Association to discuss their thoughts on the partnership, but they declined to comment at the time.
